How many times have parents felt compromised because they have asked their children to do things they themselves have not done? Well, we have some great news! There are parents in eight of our community’s schools that can with pride challenge their children to follow their example. LABB, Inc. a local community-based organization, conducted parent involvement training in Computer Technology, English as a Second Language, and Family Skills Improvement, with parent groups from eight neighborhood schools under an extended day violence prevention grant from the New York State Education Department that was awarded to Community School District 14. The participating schools were PS 19, PS 23, PS 120, PS 157, PS 250, PS 257, IS 33 and IS 49. By being part of this program, parents learned how to more effectively help their children with their schoolwork. They also benefited by gaining knowledge of computer and Internet technology, which is so essential in today’s world. Upon completion of their coursework, graduation ceremonies were held at each of the program sites. Among the most proud of these adult graduates were their children. They applauded with great enthusiasm as their parents received their certificates. Parents expressed their appreciation for receiving this opportunity to learn at their respective schools. Some parents wanted to overcome their fear of computers, many of which hoped the training would lead to better jobs in the future. After the graduation ceremony for parent participants at PS 250, District 14 School Board President stated, “ This initiative has been extremely valuable because it not only gave parents an opportunity to learn about computer technology so that they can better help their children with their school work, it also allowed them to serve as positive role models for their children. The most excited persons at today’s graduation are the participating parent’s children. Our School District will be seeking additional resources to expand this successful program.”
