LCA SEMINARS ON DIGITAL TV
Digital TV
LCA in partnership with WABC-7 conducted a seminar on Digital TV at JWJ Senior Center on May 28, 2009 [Video].
NEW YORK, NY -- The Latino Center on Aging in conjunction with WPIX-11 TV, the National Hispanic Media Coalition - NY Chapter, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and WABC-7 sponsored a series of three seminars on Digital TV. The last one took place this May 28, 2009 at the East Harlem Coalition of Senior Centers located at 2205 First Avenue, Manhattan, starting at 11:00 AM.

On June 12, 2009 all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and began broadcasting only in digital. Digital broadcasting allows stations to offer improved picture and sound quality and additional channels.

Viewers with cable or satellite TV won't notice a difference, but people who watch for free need a converter box.

Until July 31, 2009 all U.S. households will be able to request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the future purchase of eligible digital-to-analog converter boxes. For more details on how to get these coupons Click here.

NEW YORK, NY -- April, 2008 -- We have changed the name of our organization to something more universally understood (and pronounced for that matter). The Latino Gerontological Center is now called Latino Center on Aging.

The announcement came out at the same time of the organization's 17th anniversary.

NEW NAME, NEW LOOK, SAME COMMITMENT

AMERICA: WE ARE YOU PROJECT
LGC Conference
The importance of the Latino presence in the USA cannot be denied one more day. Society needs to develop full awareness that WE are America.

New York, NY – In preparation for its 2nd National Conference on Latino Elderly back in 2005, the Latino Gerontological Center (LGC) commissioned Duda Penteado, a renowned international fine artist, to develop the official conference poster. Mr. Penteado unveiled his poster on June 23, 2005 in New York City. The feedback received from his work was outstanding, and led to the commissioning of a theme song to highlight the "We Are You" campaign.

Inspired by Duda’s painting and poem, Hiram Colón composed the theme song of LGC’s project “We Are You.” The song was played on live television on June 29th, 2007 during the “Good Day New York” program of FOX 5-NY (Video). It was such a success that we received and accepted invitations to appear on the 4th of July in Telemundo-News (Video) and on New York's Channel 9 (Video) on July 8th.

LGC is taken its “We Are You” project to the mass media and collegiate circuit. Our goal is to help the community at large to assimilate the changes taking shape in America and to understand the growing importance of the Hispanics. In 35 years, Latinos in the US will amount close to 150 million, and by the year 2010, the disposable income controlled by U. S. Latinos will reach a trillion dollars.

LGC'S NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE LATINO ELDERLY FINAL REPORT
LGC Conference
Here's the Final Report on LGC's Second National Conference
New York, NY -- The Latino Gerontological Center (LGC) is presently disseminating the Final Report of its Second National Conference on the status of the Latino elderly. To allow a maximum participation of Latino seniors as well as their service providers, this effort included a series of Round Table discussions held in Orlando, FL on May 12; Chicago, IL on May 24; and New York City on October 6-7, 2005, for the specific purpose of creating regional agendas.

We combined the observations and recommendations from our Second National Conference to form a National Latino Aging Agenda, containing information relevant to all U.S. Latino seniors, such as the economic, social, programming, and institutional barriers that impede and limit their access to senior services and programs, which are often exacerbated by language and cultural differences.

Direct deposit is simply the best way for people to get their Social Security and SSI payments because it eliminates the risk of stolen checks, reduces fraud and gives them more control over their money. Plus, direct deposit allows immediate access to funds from virtually anywhere.

A simple action like enrolling in direct deposit can offer much-needed peace of mind to people who rely on federal benefits, most of whom are seniors and people with disabilities.
